WI Approved – Thomas the Baker gets the local Women’s Institute’s seal of approval

Thomas the Baker is celebrating after getting the seal of approval from some of the most trusted taste testers in the country, famed for their baking skills – the WI.

The Yorkshire bakery put its Party Platters to the test with over 70 guests and members of the local Appleton-le-Moors Women’s Institute to ask for their feedback.

Thomas the Baker’s Party Platters include a range of savoury and sweet items, such as sandwiches, sausage and savoury rolls, pork pies, quiches, cheese straws, fruit tarts and profiteroles. The company aims to take the effort out of catering for parties and groups with freshly made products which can be ordered online or in person and collected at any of its 30 stores. Independent research conducted by Thomas’ revealed that 44 per cent of us find catering for parties stressful, and one in four (26 per cent) have not enjoyed a get together they’ve hosted because they’ve been worrying about organising the food.

The tastings took place at a WI event which saw £1,000 raised for St Catherine’s Hospice. All 100 per cent of the respondents said they would buy the party platters themselves for a suitable occasion, and 94 per cent said they were better than other brands they had tried. Four out of five members rated the taste of the food as excellent with a staggering 97 per cent saying they could tell the pastries and sandwiches had been baked fresh that day.

Simon Thomas, general manager of Thomas the Baker, said: “WI events are always famous for their buffets and their bakes! So, we thought who better to really put us to the test and give us some honest feedback? We were delighted with how well received the platters were and we received lots of useful comments to help us refine what we offer even further. Freshness is something we pride ourselves on, baking fresh every day both in store and at our central bakery in Helmsley, so we were particularly delighted to hear 95 per cent of our discerning taste testers rated the freshness as excellent.”

Carolyn Frank, who organises the Appleton-le-Moors WI programme of speakers, events and activities said: ““Thomas the Baker gave us a wonderful spread for our special evening, all the ladies genuinely enjoyed the platters, Appleton-le-moors WI have a good reputation for our event suppers and this one certainly did not disappoint. Having it delivered took all the work out of catering for our hungry guests, and I’m sure the bakery will be inundated with customers for the party season – completely hassle free party food with excellent quality and price, and locally produced too, what’s not to like?!”
