Thomas of Helmsley named as a finalist at the Farm Shop & Deli Awards 2019

Thomas of Helmsley is celebrating being shortlisted in the final of the Deli category of the prestigious Farm Shop & Deli Awards 2019.

Following a thorough judging process which included a panel of industry experts, secret visits and mystery shops, the shortlist for the Farm Shop & Deli Awards 2019 has been revealed ahead of the Farm Shop & Deli Show on Monday 8th April 2019, when the winners will be announced.

Thomas of Helmsley is part of the Thomas the Baker group, a family run business established in 1981 which now has a chain of 30 bake shops across Yorkshire. The deli underwent major renovations in 2017 and now offers butchery, bakery, cheese and deli counters, greengrocery, beverages and store cupboard items. The renovations enabled the creation of high grade kitchen and butchery preparation areas, allowing the deli to offer a much wider range of products, including many ready-to-eat or cook-at-home items.

Returning for the sixth year the awards, which are in partnership with The Grocer,  commend retailers’ success in speciality sectors and regions with awards up for grabs across 11 different specialisms. Chair of Judges Nigel Barden, Co Chair of Judges Elaine Lemm and Ashleigh O’Mahony, Food Trends Reporter at The Grocer are just some of the 2019 Farm Shop & Deli Awards judges who faced the difficult task of whittling down the category finalists.

Simon Thomas, general manager of Thomas of Helmsley, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have made the shortlist for the Farm Shop & Deli Awards, which are a very well respected  benchmark within the industry. It’s been an exciting couple of years for Thomas of Helmsley, with major renovations to the 19th century building allowing us to rebuild the deli in exactly the way we wanted, better catering for our customers’ needs. We look forward to the final in April – and hopefully we can bring home the award for Helmsley and for Yorkshire!”

Chair of Judges and food and drink journalist and broadcaster Nigel Barden said: “I am delighted to continue to be involved with the Farm Shop & Deli Awards. It’s a fabulous initiative for the sector and offers the best way to recognise and reward excellence for the UK’s local, artisan and high street speciality retailers. These awards are so important for the industry. One really big factor is the quality of judges. They’re really right across the board from retailers, from producers from food and drink journalists.”

Co chair of judges Elaine Lemm added: “I feel these Awards are so important to the industry. The farm shops and delis are a very specialised sector of retailing in this country and this is a chance for them to have their voice heard, and really to get it out to the public just how important these businesses are.”
