North York Moors National Park

We like to think of the North York Moors National Park as 554 square miles of breathing room – a treasured landscape, protected for everyone to enjoy. And it’s more than just moors, with forest, coast and dale adding up to one of the most varied landscapes in the UK.

North York Moors National Park

The North York Moors National Park is a stunning place of sweeping heather moorland, ancient woodland, rolling dales and a spectacular Jurassic Age coastline – fantastic for walking, cycling and outdoor adventures of all kinds. Timeless stone villages and thriving market towns throw up surprise after surprise, from medieval church carvings to artisan bakers and breweries, while our famously dark skies make for tranquil, star-studded nights.

The National Park Authority has its headquarters in Helmsley, and the market town makes a great base for seeing the western part of the Park. Duncombe Park, Rievaulx Abbey, Sutton Bank, the Wainstones and Roseberry Topping are all within easy reach, while the flagship 109-mile Cleveland Way National Trail – a long-distance walking route right through the heart of the National Park – starts in the centre of town.

Heading east from Helmsley, visitors can take in Hutton le Hole and the open-air Ryedale Folk Museum, Thornton le Dale and Dalby Forest, the dramatic expanse of the Hole of Horcum and Levisham Moor, and the scintillating Esk Valley – not to mention the world’s most popular heritage railway, the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, which runs between Pickering and Whitby.

Check out the National Park website for free, downloadable walks and cycle rides, and browse our directories – you’ll never be short of fabulous “made in the North York Moors” places to eat, drink and shop, from Helmsley to Staithes and Scarborough, and all points in between.
