Wheelie good fun in Helmsley to mark the Tour de Yorkshire

Pedal Powered Arcade and Best Dressed Window Competition get crowds in the mood to cheer on the cyclists on 5th May

Special blue and yellow gelato available from Porters Coffee Shop

Helmsley will play host to a range of bike-themed activities to mark the Tour de Yorkshire riding through the town on Saturday 5th May.

As well as an array of colourful decorations across the town, businesses and homes are being encouraged to enter a Best Dressed Window competition. In an attempt to turn the town into a sea of blue and yellow to welcome the riders and their entourage, the Helmsley in Business group will be awarding fun prizes for the best dwelling window and best business window – and the public will be encouraged to vote for their favourites on the town’s Facebook page.

There will also be activities to get everyone active thanks to the Helmsley Community Library, which is working with Get Cycling from York to host a Pedal Powered Arcade.

Situated on the road in between the Royal Oak and the Town Hall between 12pm and 4pm, there will be three activities for children and adults to take part in:

There will also be themed activities taking place in the library from 12noon until 1pm, including biscuit decorating and designing a Tour de Yorkshire cycling shirt. The peloton is expected to pass through Helmsley just after 3pm on 5th May.

Porters Coffee Shop is also making a special themed gelato in honour of the occasion – one scoop of yellow mascarpone and pear and one scoop of blue bilberry – or bubblegum for the children.

The Black Swan Hotel is also hosting a special outdoor event area for those enjoying food or a drink at the coaching inn, perfect to watch the riders race by and also including a big screen, bar and hog roast.

Some businesses, such as Spear Travels, will be holding in store bike-themed competitions, for the chance to win goodies or vouchers.

Katie Atkinson, owner of KVA Planning and member of Helmsley in Business, has helped organise the Tour de Yorkshire activity in the town. She said: “The cyclists will be coming through around mid-afternoon, but the caravan and all its entertainment and freebies will also be visiting us just before 1.30pm, so it’s definitely worth coming and making a day of it! The Pedal-Powered Arcade sounds like loads of fun, the town will be colourful and welcoming, and the window displays will be well worth a stroll around if the plans we’re hearing are anything to go by! Like the delicious blue and yellow gelato at Porters, there will be Tour de Yorkshire themed goodies in the shops and cafes, so it would seem a shame not to stop for an ice cream or a cuppa! We can’t wait to welcome the Tour de Yorkshire again and hopefully Helmsley and its crowds cheering the riders on will do us proud.”

Anyone wishing to take part in the Best Dressed Window Competition should take a photo of their window display and email it to enquiries@visithelmsley.co.uk no later than Wednesday 2nd May. Entries will be displayed on the Visit Helmsley facebook page and the public will be asked to vote for their favourites. The winning windows will be announced on the evening of Saturday 5th May 2018.
