Let the weekend be-gin

Drinks sampling events at Hunters of Helmsley to offer tastings of Yorkshire-inspired gins and a new range of Yorkshire-produced alcohol-free spirits

If gin’s your thing, Hunters of Helmsley is the place to be on Friday 12th April.

Hooting Owl Distillery, which is based just outside York in the historic Barmby Moor House, will be offering free tastings of its Yorkshire-inspired gins at the award-winning deli – and encouraging people to take a selfie with some cool steampunk attire.

The distillery has created a gin for each region within Yorkshire, using flavours reminiscent of the different counties. The North Yorkshire variety is inspired by the Moors with a fruity flavour incorporating heather and bilberries. West Yorkshire offers a spicy gin containing the traditional curry spices of cardamom, turmeric and cumin, sweetened by Pontefract-inspired liquorice. South Yorkshire takes its flavours from the herby Barnsley Chop. East Yorkshire brings with it tastes reminiscent of the seaside and the Yorkshire Wolds with kelp, honey and Hawthorne blossom.

Tastings will run from 11am at Hunters, which is based on Helmsley’s picturesque Market Place.

For those who like to keep a clear head, Hunters will also be offering tastings of Wetherby-based Bax Botanics alcohol free spirit on Friday April 26th from 11am to 3pm. Distilled in the same way traditional spirits are, but without the alcohol, the liquid is flavoured with a variety of botanicals, such as Sea Buckthorn with fragrant herbs, fruity Seville oranges and the taste of warm, buttery baking, or the refreshing Verbena, with herbs, citrus notes and hints of menthol.
