Hunters of Helmsley honoured in Great British Food Awards

Yorkshire deli receives highly commended award

Local deli Hunters of Helmsley has received a ‘highly commended’ at the Great British Food Awards 2016.

The awards were established three years ago to pay homage to the fabulous artisans behind the nation’s favourite food and drink. Following the inaugural ceremony, the awards have gone from strength to strength with 2016 seeing various household names being featured as judges and winners across 31 tasty categories.

Hunters of Helmsley has been awarded a ‘highly commended’ in the Best Independent Retailer category for the Northern region. The shop sailed to its runners up position thanks to votes from Great British Food magazine readers. Voters acknowledged Hunters for its years of dedication to sourcing and promoting delicacies from across the Yorkshire region and beyond. As well as consistently providing quality produce Hunters also won favour for getting involved with exciting projects and events. The store is currently offering customers a taste of Rio with their Olympic Bauru Sandwich, a favourite in South America and now the Ryedale district!

Judges linked to the awards included Rosemary Shrager, Richard Corrigan and Great British Bake Off winners Edd Kimber and John Whaite, whilst fellow award winners included none other than the nation’s favourite Mary Berry and The Hairy Bikers.

Christine Garnett who owns Hunters of Helmsley alongside her husband Chris, said: “We are so pleased to have been honoured with such a prestigious award. We really do strive to provide our customers with items that are of the best quality and so being recognised for our work is both incredible and touching. Thanks so much to everyone who took the time to vote. We love what we do at Hunters and will continue to listen to our customers to bring them the best service and produce we possibly can.”

Natasha Lovell-Smith, Editor of Great British Food Magazine and chair of the judging panel, said: “I was truly blown away with the quality of entries this year. Our judges had a very tough job having to choose the best from such a brilliant selection, but I’m delighted with the results. We had entries from producers of all sizes, from every corner of the UK, and the quality of food was just outstanding. Our judges are experts in their fields, and all of our winners, runners up and finalists should feel very proud indeed!”
