‘Christmas Favourites’ Tree Festival welcomes thousands and raises £1,750 for local causes

Helmsley’s seventh annual Christmas Tree Festival has been hailed a huge success with over 3,000 estimated visitors through the doors across the two weeks.

More than £1,750 was raised in voluntary donations to be split between St Leonard’s Hospice, All Saints Church and the Helmsley in Business group.

The festival, which takes place in Helmsley’s All Saints Church, featured more than 20 trees which were individually decorated by businesses and organisations around the town on the theme of Christmas Favourites. Individual trees, which all came from the Duncombe Park Estate, focused on everything from Santa and Christmas cards to Christmas dinner and festive getaways.

A vote was held on the best dressed tree. Over 1,400 votes were cast and the winning tree was declared to be the 1st Helmsley Scout Group for their creative ‘stocking’ tree, complete with tent. Second place was taken by the nativity themed tree by All Saints Church and third place was awarded to Helmsley Wines for the wine-cork creativity on their reindeer tree.

The Festival ran from 30th November to 15th December when a Nine Lessons Carol service brought the Christmas Tree Festival to an official end.

Bev Nicholson, secretary of Helmsley in Business, said: “The Christmas Tree Festival was a huge success yet again, every year we attract thousands of visitors who come and admire our wonderful, historic church and the creative, dazzling trees within. It’s the perfect start to the Christmas season. Even though the Christmas Tree Festival has now finished, we’re still running our Bean Stalk Trail around town until the end of the month. Families can pick up an entry form at any participating business and then they have to find what’s hidden at the top of 15 beanstalks around town to win a prize. It’s a fun thing to do while finishing off your Christmas shopping and supporting local businesses – keeping everyone in the family happy!”
