Celebrity chef cooks up a storm at Grand Opening event

Thomas of Helmsley now a ‘one-stop’ deli, butcher and bakery, following £750,000 renovations

Yorkshire chef Stephanie Moon runs a day of cookery demonstrations and tastings for visitors

Reopening after £750,000 renovations, Thomas of Helmsley celebrated this weekend with a Grand Opening event which saw a celebrity chef running demonstrations and tastings throughout the day.

The Grand Opening of Thomas of Helmsley, which took place on 30th September, saw well-known Yorkshire chef Stephanie Moon preparing a range of tasty, fresh food to inspire people to cook at home. Demonstrating interesting ways to use products available within the deli, from freshly baked artisan bread to sausages and stir fries, visitors were able to try samples and ask questions of Stephanie, who has worked in kitchens across the world, including The Dorchester. She now regularly works with Thomas the Baker to help create recipes for both the deli and the firm’s chain of 30 bake shops.

Stephanie was ably assisted by Thomas’ team of experts, including Mike the Master Butcher, Steve the Artisan Bread Baker, Margaret the In-house Cheese Expert, June the Sandwich Specialist and Trevor the Chef, from whom an exciting new range of freshly prepared meals and products has been launched, ‘From Trevor’s Kitchen’.

Helmsley’s record-breaking town crier also put in an appearance, to herald the reopening with a specially written cry, sharing some of the history of the shop, which dates back to the 1800s.

As well as offering a butchery counter, greengrocery, cheese and deli counters, beverages and store cupboard items, the deli now also incorporates the Thomas the Baker bakery, which was previously based across the Market Place in the North Yorkshire town of Helmsley. The major renovation work has enabled the creation of high grade kitchen and butchery preparation areas, allowing the deli to offer a much wider range of products, including many ready-to-eat or cook-at-home items such as lasagne, pasta bakes, quiches, stir fries and pies.

Simon Thomas said: “The opening event went really well, it was fantastic to see so much going on, and to feel the buzz in the store. Stephanie and the team did an amazing job, cooking up a storm right through the day, so people could try lots of different things. The new store not only looks completely different, but is now able to stock a much broader range. We want to cater for anyone just wanting to grab a sandwich or pasty, those after a quick and easy dinner idea and also people who like to be inventive and creative in the kitchen. So hopefully there’s something for everyone in there!”

Stephanie Moon added: “It was a fabulous day – the people of Helmsley took great interest in the food being produced and all seemed to really enjoy the samples we made. Helmsley is a true foodie town and the addition to the centre of the newly revamped bakery, deli and butchers has really been welcomed by all.”

The store will be running regular themed tasting events on weekends before Christmas, to introduce some of the new items available.
