Gluten-free Helmsley

Eating out for those who have food allergies or intolerances can be notoriously difficult. You don’t always want to have to take your own food, or fall back on the same old boring options. Sometimes it’s nice to be able to be spontaneous and to have the same choices as everyone else!

In Helmsley many of our food and drink providers are trying to help those who may need to follow a gluten free diet. Coeliac disease is a lifelong autoimmune disease caused by a reaction to gluten, with one in 100 people suffering from the condition, and many more believing themselves to have some level of gluten intolerance.

So if you’re looking for gluten free treats on your visit to the town, where are our top 5 tips on where to head?

Our famous Hunters of Helmsley deli recently started stocking the delicious Vida Villi gluten free range, which is made in a village near York by a coeliac sufferer. We think anyone would struggle to tell the range was gluten free. Products available at Hunters include cakes such as Bakewell Tart and Yorkshire Parkin, and pastries such as Harrogate Blue Cheese and Red Onion Quiche or Curried Potato and Spinach Pie. Yum…

The talents of chefs at Gepettos Italian know no bounds. The restaurant now offers all pizzas and pasta as gluten free to either eat in or take away. No more limited choices when out for dinner with friends!

Everyone loves fish and chips, but it can be difficult for those avoiding gluten. Scotts Fish and Chips offers gluten free batter all day, every day, so anyone can dig in!

Borogate’s Crema Coffee House offers all sandwiches, paninis and crumpets as gluten free options. The Cake of the Day is always gluten free, and there are at least three or four gluten free cake options every day including favourites such as caramel slice, chocolate orange cake, mocha, clementine, fruit cake, cherry and almond and apple crumble cake. Gluten free scones are also available in the summer – cream teas here we come!

If you’re staying overnight, The Feversham Arms Hotel will always cater for special dietary requirements and, if alerted in advance, will have a selection of gluten free options available, as well as always having basic gluten free ingredients to hand.

If you have a sweet tooth then take a step into Helmsley Traditional Sweet Shop where you can revel in a whole array of wonderful treats. You would be surprised at how many are actually gluten free!
