Helmsley prepares for a tree-mendous Christmas

  • Light switch on and Christmas Tree Festival preview evening to take place on 29th November from 6pm
  • Christmas Tree Festival open daily from 30th November to 15th December

Final preparations are being made for Helmsley’s Christmas Light Switch on and the start of its seventh annual Christmas Tree festival.

The light switch on will take place on 29th November at 6pm around the Christmas tree in the Market Place, accompanied by the Swinton Brass Band. From there people can process up to All Saints Church for the preview evening of Helmsley’s famous Christmas Tree Festival which begins at 6.30pm. Visitors can get a sneak peak at the 25 individually decorated trees – all in the theme of ‘Christmas Favourites’ – as well as enjoying music, mince pies and a drink. The Christmas Tree Festival is then open daily (10am to 4pm) until 15th December. Entry is free but money raised from donations will be split between St Leonard’s Hospice, All Saints Church and the Helmsley in Business group.

Helmsley’s Christmas lights should be the brightest yet, with the Helmsley in Business group fundraising for the decorations each year, and so far having raised more than £10,000. The town’s award winning town crier David Hinde will announce the switch on of the lights – which given he holds the world record for the loudest cry should mean the town is kept well informed!

Tony Porter, chair of Helmsley in Business and owner of Porters Coffee Shop, said: “We are very excited for the ‘official’ start of the festive season. We have been steadily updating Helmsley’s Christmas decorations since we launched in 2012 and so every year the town gets a little brighter! The Christmas Tree Festival is always a highlight and something people have come to enjoy year after year. The businesses and organisations behind the tree decorations have been planning in earnest! We will then have our Small Business Saturday event to look forward to as well on December 7th. For a small market town we always try our hardest to make Christmas truly magical.”

Tickets for the Christmas Tree Festival Preview evening cost £5 and are available from Porters Coffee Shop and Helmsley Library.
