Helmsley gets into the festive spirit with Small Business Saturday celebrations

Christmas events taking place across the town from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 7th December

Small Business Saturday celebrations are being finalised in Helmsley as the town prepares for a day of festive fun.

Taking place on Saturday 7th December, Small Business Saturday aims to recognise the many wonderful independent business in the UK and encourage people to shop local this Christmas.

Celebrating the event for the sixth year, Helmsley will be holding a day of festive activities for all the family, from 10am to 4pm. Parking in the Cleveland Way car park will cost just £1.50 for the day, thanks to Ryedale Council.

Part of the Market Place car park will be set aside for stalls, rides and games. Representatives from the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, Scouts and St Leonards Hospice, amongst many others, will be on hand selling Christmas goodies, providing information and offering chances to win prizes. Daredevils can also try their hand at the bucking reindeer and buzz wire to put their skills to the test.

An artisan craft fair will take place on the first floor of the Town Hall, whilst downstairs at 10am will be craft demonstrations along with a WI Cake Stall which will be running until 2pm. A table top sale will be taking place in the library until 2pm. Helmsley’s record breaking town crier will be spreading festive cheer around town and businesses will be running their own events and special offers. Head to Hunters of Helmsley for free tasters and The Ginger Bear for a glass of prosecco while you shop!

To tie into the first performance of the much-anticipated Helmsley Arts Centre pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk, there will be a prize for the grown up visitor with the best pantomime dame outfit – who this year is Dame Lumpydrawers! For children there will be a prize for the best Jack and the Beanstalk costume, with judging for both taking place at 12 noon in the Market Place. The curtains will open on a matinee performance of the pantomime at 2.30pm, with the evening performance at 7.30pm. Tickets can be purchased at the Arts Centre.

A Jack and the Beanstalk Trail will also take place around town – 15 beanstalks have popped up in businesses – can you find what’s hidden at the top of each? A small prize will be offered to those who find them all and entry forms are available at any participating business.

Helmsley’s famous Christmas Tree Festival will also be open from 10am to 4pm, offering the chance to see more than 20 trees individually decorated around the theme of Christmas Favourites. Entry is free with donations going to local good causes.

Lynn Hempsall, Helmsley in Business committee member and owner of Helmsley Traditional Sweet Shop, said: “The Festive Fun day is always fantastic, and there’s usually a really great buzz around town. Helmsley is known for its wide range of brilliant independent businesses and so Small Business Saturday is a great opportunity to celebrate how important they are in our community. Hopefully lots of people will come along and support our local shops and businesses – it’s the perfect opportunity to pick up some Christmas gifts and treats and stop for a hot chocolate and slice of cake, while enjoying the festivities!”
