Fabulous Meat and Fish Company fuels British Powerlift hopeful ahead of World Championships

Helmsley based Fabulous Meat and Fish Company is sponsoring a local British hopeful in the World Powerlifting Championships next month – as well as keeping him in enough protein to cover his 5000 calorie a day requirements!

Ben Wharton, who lives in Hovingham, will represent GB in the World Classic Powerlifting Championships at Helsinborg in Sweden on 9th June. He is ranked ninth in the world in his class.

Twenty two year old Ben, who works part time in the Hovingham village shop and also coaches powerlifting, trains four to five times a week, in sessions lasting four to five hours. Powerlifting is made up of three lifts, squat, bench and deadlift, with the goal being to lift as much weight in total as possible.

The Fabulous Meat and Fish Company met Ben through providing produce for Hovingham Stores where he works. As well as sponsoring him, they also keep him well supplied with the vast amounts of good quality protein he needs to maintain his weight. On training days Ben often needs to consume 4500-5000 calories, and in order to fuel himself properly, recover effectively and build the most muscle, around 30 per cent of those need to be from high quality protein.

The ex-Ryedale School pupil was previously a shot put and discus thrower, competing for Yorkshire. His build, however, wasn’t best suited to the sport, which is when he discovered powerlifting.  In 2016 he came fourth in the national British Junior Powerlifting championships, breaking the Yorkshire Under 23 (U23) squat record and also taking the Open (All Ages) squat record as a 93kg lifter.

In 2017 he placed second at the English Championships, and the Commonwealth Powerlifting Championships, before making the decision to move up a weight class from 93kg to 105kg. He then deadlifted his first 300kg deadlift, which broke the U23 Yorkshire record in the new weight class and achieved his first 600lb squat (272.5kg).

Further strong placings in the British University championships, British Junior Championships and British Squads led to Ben being invited to The World Powerlifting Championships.

Ben said: “My personal goal for the competition is to come in the top six or seven, however I know that all I can do is my best, so I want to go and have a good time and feel proud of my performance. I have one more year as an U23 next year, so I’m pushing for the best possible placing at the Worlds and at the British Junior Powerlifting Championships in October and my biggest goal this year is to win that. It would be great to break at least one British record.

“As you can imagine, training the way I do, I need to eat a very high calorie but healthy diet, and good quality meat is a key part of that. I’m very grateful to The Fabulous Meat and Fish Company for keeping me well supplied – I’m very lucky to have such a fantastic company on my doorstep who wanted to support me!”

Amanda Goodwill from the Fabulous Meat and Fish Company added: “We are delighted to be backing Ben and doing our bit to keep him well fed with the very best quality produce. We only buy our meats direct from local farmers and take very seriously our commitment to animal welfare and provenance. We wish Ben all the best in the upcoming World Championships, and we’ll be cheering him on from Helmsley!”
