Donations of old boots welly-come in Helmsley

Town calls out for any old wellington boots ahead of summer festival

The Helmsley in Business Group is asking any local residents if they could check their garages, sheds, car boots and cupboards for any spare old wellies they no longer need.

The town is planning a Summer holiday event which will see Helmsley taken over by colourful wellies – and the group is hoping all the town’s businesses, residents and attractions will get involved.

Wellies will be on display around the town – put to a wide range of uses from becoming plant pots to being a canvas for creative artwork. Wellies of a less traditional kind will be making an appearance too.

Tony Porter, chair of Helmsley in Business and owner of Porters Coffee Shop, said: “We’re not giving too much away at this stage, but we wanted to do something over the Summer which is fun for families and visitors and which makes the town even more colourful and spectacular. So, we’re putting a call out for donations of wellies of all shapes, sizes and colours – don’t worry if they’re falling to pieces or have been in the shed for a year – we’ll make good use of them! We also want residents to get involved in adding to the welly display too – so if they fancy planting up a welly to put outside their front door, or the kids want to get creative with some paints, it will all help add to the marvellous community feel Helmsley is famous for.”

Wellies for donation can be taken to Helmsley Traditional Sweet Shop or Porters Coffee Shop – and wellies can also be picked up in the same places to be used for displays.
