Matt Hillier Photographer

I am a landscape and nature photographer based in Helmsley, in the North York Moors National Park. I produce greetings cards and prints and take on commissions for local people and businesses.

I took up photography at a young age when I was given an old film camera, and used to take holiday snaps mostly. I took more and more photos after I bought my first digital camera though, and studying Environmental Conservation at uni in Sheffield prompted me to buy an SLR. It was the Peak District that provided my early subjects, and I became hooked.

Now I can call the North York Moors home once again, I photograph all the places I used to explore as a child and more. I am always on the look out for new locations, and local knowledge plays a large part in my research process. I design my own greetings card range, and hand-mount my own photographic prints. I sell these locally, and attend craft fairs too. I am also a qualified primary school teacher, and enjoy the principles of teaching and learning – even in the world of photography.

Wildlife and nature are big passions of mine, and photographing the landscapes of the Moors and coast allows me time to appreciate the beauty of our region. Selling my work is my way of trying to promote its beauty so that we may avoid taking it for granted, and hopefully all work to look after it as best we can. If you can’t make it out as much as you’d like, an image can bring that environment to you. In fact, one of my cards reached as far away as Canada back when I started!
