A reason to Celebrate – Helmsley cake business rises to the occasion of its 10th anniversary

Celebrate Country Cake Design in Helmsley is marking its 10th anniversary with a charity cake sale and a special offer for customers.

To celebrate 10 years in business this October, owner Rhian Crusher will be baking a special cake to give away to customers, who can make a donation to Parkinson’s UK in return for a slice. The business will also be offering a 10 per cent discount on any cake bookings taken in the anniversary week (7th to 14th October 2018)*.

Over the past decade Rhian estimates she has made 2,700 cakes complete with 2,350kg of icing – which is about the same weight as an adult male rhino! After studying bakery and sugarcraft at college, Rhian, who is originally from Wales, gained as much experience as she could, from working at a small family bakery near Munich and holding a teaching post at Neath College, to moving to North Yorkshire to work for Thomas The Bakers. In 2008, when space became available at the Helmsley Walled Garden Craft Units, Rhian felt the time was right to set up on her own.

Rhian Crusher said: “I can’t believe it has been 10 years since I baked my first cake at Celebrate Country Cake Design, and it felt right to do something to mark the occasion! Trends have changed, even just over the last decade. People want more elaborate cakes for a range of occasions – baby showers, Christenings, birthdays, graduations, weddings, anniversaries, retirements, thank yous – and even holiday cottage welcome cakes! It’s exciting not knowing what the next request to come through the door will be. My proudest moments are when customers pick up their cakes and I see their smiles – and hopefully they get back in touch to tell me how it tasted! A cake should look amazing, but of course it needs to taste fantastic too!

“Social media like Pinterest often helps people come up with their initial idea, but it’s always nice to put my own thoughts into it. Decorations are often very personal to the individuals, which is lovely. Based where we are, there’s a lot of cakes with an animal theme – growing up on a farm I’m quite adept at specialist breeds! I think the cake I created for the 25th anniversary of Hunters of Helmsley was the trickiest cake I’ve ever made, as it was in the shape of the shop but with part of it opened up so that you could see inside. I can also find it a challenge having to transport cakes – being a rural baker there’s far too many cattle grids, pot holes, rough tracks and steep hills to contend with!”

Rhian is offering a 10 per cent discount on any cake ordered during the anniversary week, including wedding cakes for 2019/2020, subject to date availability*.

Rhian added: “The most popular sponges for 2018 weddings have been my orange, chocolate and salted caramel; raspberry and white chocolate; or blueberry and ginger varieties. Rustic cakes and buttercream finishes are very on trend. For birthdays it tends to be plain sponge with locally produced Strawberry jam and buttercream, or chocolate sponge cake coming a very close second.”

The special anniversary cake will be available from Celebrate Country Cake Design’s Helmsley Walled Garden Craft Unit base from 9th to noon on 12th October, subject to availability, and donations to Parkinsons UK in return for a slice would be gratefully received.
