Google Gurus head to Helmsley

Helmsley welcomed experts from technological giant Google this week, offering valuable digital training to more than 80 local businesses.

As part of their prize for winning the best Market Town category of the Great British High Street Awards, the Helmsley in Business (HiB) group was rewarded with a visit from Google’s Digital Garage team.

Businesses from the town were encouraged to attend the event, held at the Helmsley Arts Centre, with HiB also extending the invitation to organisations from other places nearby including York, Whitby and the local market towns.

A two hour training session had businesses attending presentations and being involved in Q&A sessions on subjects such as how to make your website shine, how to develop rich content, the importance of analytics, and how to reach new customers online.

This was followed by one-to-one sessions for 15 HiB member businesses with a Google mentor, providing an online presence ‘health check’ and answering specific questions.

The new not-for-profit campaign “Do It Digital”, which encourages small business owners to become more digitally active, also featured the day in their 100 days of digital. Some Helmsley in Business members, including Libby Butler Jewellers, Scotts of Helmsley, Bisca, Venetos and Helmsley Traditional Sweet Shop, helped to provide case studies to inspire other businesses to use digital technologies more widely. 

Carolyn Frank from Libby Butler Jewellers, committee member of Helmsley in Business and event attendee, said: “The Google Digital Garage session was really useful, full of simple tips and insight on how to provide the best customer service online, by maximising your digital presence.  I know a lot of businesses were inspired to go away and put their new skills to use, even the ones who are already very digitally savvy. I think our Superfast broadband in Helmsley was put to the test as we all rushed online! It was fantastic to see so many enthusiastic business owners and managers at the event, and from all across the region.  When we won the prize, it was important to us that we shared that with the wider community – anything Helmsley in Business can do to promote and help small businesses and grow the local economy is great. The special 1-2-1 sessions for our local businesses afterwards were brilliant too, when else would you have the opportunity to get personalised advice and expertise from those in the know?  We will be repeating the 1-2-1s in the future so more Helmsley in Business members can benefit.”
