Helmsley has beaten off hundreds of high streets across the country to be named Britain’s Best Market Town! Amazing!
As a category winner of the Great British High Street Awards 2015, Helmsley will now receive a share of a total prize pot worth £80,000 – alongside expert training and tailor-made tips from Google’s training taskforce for one hundred local businesses.
Judges were impressed by the by the independent spirit of the town, the range of events held throughout year such as the popular Christmas tree festival but also the number held to counteract seasonality. They were also impressed by the wide range of interesting schemes including the new ‘motorhome parking project’ bringing a regular flow of tourists to the town to support the evening economy. Helmsley in Business has undertaken a great PR campaign including website and social media, with 4,200 twitter followers, 1,000 facebook followers and over 300 press pieces.

It doesn’t stop here – we have plans in place for international marketing, new events, our member businesses are gaining accolades and awards across all sectors, we are welcoming new businesses to town, and new Helmsley fans too. There is a buzz around town! Our small businesses think big, and our community is strong and future-proof because we believe in working together.
Helmsley is the only market town in the North York Moors National Park. It attracts tourists and local visitors with a warm Yorkshire welcome and is a beautiful historic town. For a town with 1400 residents, we have more than 100 small businesses and a diverse cultural and leisure offering. However, in the current climate, we wanted to ensure Helmsley continued to thrive. So in 2012 Helmsley in Business was formed.
We have run successful events, had over 300 pieces of national and international PR coverage, collaborated on innovative marketing projects like our new brochure and our promotional video, and have worked with partners like the Federation of Small Businesses, the Local Enterprise Partnership and the North York Moors National Park as well as local councils, raised money for charity, formed business networks between businesses and the organisation has grown to over 50 members.
It doesn’t stop here – we have plans in place for a new website, international marketing, new events and our member businesses are gaining many accolades in awards across all sectors, we are welcoming new businesses to town, and new Helmsley fans too.
