Celebrate the best thing since sliced bread this British Sandwich Week – the Yorkshire Flat Cap Sandwich

Thomas of Helmsley creates the Yorkshire Flat Cap Special to mark the week, starting 20th May

One Yorkshire bakery is giving customers a real taste of the region this British Sandwich Week with the introduction of the ‘Yorkshire Flat Cap Special’.

Introduced at Thomas of Helmsley specially for the week, the Flat Cap is a flat white roll, baked fresh on site and, in true Yorkshire tradition, filled with topside of beef, creamed horseradish sauce and locally made caramelized red onion chutney.

British Sandwich Week runs from 20th to 26th May and is a celebration of one of the nation’s favourite fast foods – famously named after John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, who ordered cold beef between slices of bread so he could eat whilst playing cards. Brits now eat a whopping 3.5 billion sandwiches every year.

Simon Thomas, general manager of Thomas of Helmsley, said: “We sell a thousands of sandwiches in our Thomas the Baker stores every week, so it seemed only apt that we should celebrate British Sandwich Week. And what better way to celebrate than with a special sandwich representing God’s own county – even down to the flat cap shaped bread roll. It’s initially just available for the week from 20th to 26th May, but if it proves popular we may well make it part of our regular menu.”

Thomas the Baker has 30 stores across the county, including the flagship Thomas of Helmsley deli. The Flat Cap Special will be on sale in all stores from 20th May for £3.00. For more information go to www.thomasthebaker.co.uk or twitter.com/thomasthebaker
